Kelli, your story warmed my heart. I spent every summer with your great grandparents starting at age 11. Uncle Shirl taught me and my sister how to whittle and we loved it. Caroline was into it more than me and I believe she still has her finished art. Uncle Shirl took us on walks, taught us about plants and animals, and taught me how to drive. The first summer he let me sit on his lap and operate the steering wheel on his old International truck. The next summer he taught me to change gears (on the steering column mind you) and then I graduated to drive out the hollow to the mail box at Aunt Mabels — across the 4-lane! And at the end, when I was 15 he let me drive to Chapmanville. Of course, Aunt Lena never knew! Growing up, I didn’t have a biological grandfather, but Uncle Shirl, was my adopted grandfather and I loved him more than anyone else on earth. He wrote a little poem for me once and it had just a simple verse. It said “Always remember to take time to smell the flowers”. So even as a young girl, he was teaching me about not taking life too seriously and remembering to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life. Thank you for sharing your story. We both have a deep love and respect for an incredible man.

Oh my. I was not aware. I will most definitely keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. You kids be safe in your travels to and fro.
On another note: am totally bummed out that I did not see you at Aunt Mabel’s over Thanksgiving. You all were on your trip. I got to visit with your granny though, which was a blessing for me, as I love her so.
I’m on FB now so I’m able to keep with you and your brother and mom through that channel.
