Porter’s Liniment Salve
Have you guys ever heard of this stuff? Because I hadn’t until I met my husband. Every time he’d get a little cut or sore spot on his hands/arms from working, he’d lament that we didn’t have any Porter’s Salve. Apparently his parents used it all the times for minor injuries when he was a kid, complete with magic words to make the hurt go away. The stuff smells like…I don’t know what. Very old-fashioned medicine-y. But I love it.
Here’s the thing – it actually works. I takes the soreness out of cuts and scrapes. If calms itchy rashes (such as poison ivy). I love the stuff. My step mom found some at a little local drug store a while back and got us a tub for Christmas. And I LOVE the totally vintage package design. Yes, that is a tin.
Have you ever used Porter’s Salve? Are there other decades-old products like this I should know about? What IS liniment salve, anyway? (I looked it up – no help).

My Mom always has this stuff. She also has the local drug store in town buy it for her from a catalog because she can’t find it anywhere. I think because I grew up on the stuff, I never realized I was in the minority. No wonder my friends didn’t want to hang out when I wrecked my bike. I’m immune to the smell by now, but i guess they weren’t.
The men folk in my family use something similar-I will check up on the name, but they used it on the horses anytime they had a cut or a scrape, and did the same on their own hands. It has a very medicine like smell as well. It works!
My family has been using it for a few generations now. I believe my great grandparents used it and I use it. I swear by it just like each of the generations before me. Had a friend at the one college I went to that used to get very upset when I used it because of how it smells, but nothing else I have ever used seams to work as well.
Great article, totally what I needed.
