A Little Break

Friday evening, my dad and step-mom came down to visit, like they do every week or so. I was extra tired, as it’s just been a very busy workweek. Not to mention I babysat a five-month-old on Thursday (fun!… and totally exhausting). So by Friday evening I was spent. We had sat down to have dinner when Mason started in with some whiny “mommyyyyyyyyyy…. mommyyyyyyyyy!” and I said – not completely cheerfully – WHAT?

I looked at dad half-expecting to get a “now calm down” comment, and instead he offered to take Mason home with them for the night, so I could have a break. I agreed. It doesn’t hurt that both my kids look forward to any visit to any of the three sets of grandparents’ houses. (Who wouldn’t? Didn’t you all love to stay with your grandparents when you were kids? I know I did.)

We gave the kids a bath, put their PJ’s on, I put Sydney to bed and shipped Mason to Poppy and Nana’s house. Meanwhile, I cleaned, did four loads of laundry, and had a wonderfully relaxing evening. (I find cleaning relaxing. I may be a freak of nature.)

Saturday, we headed toward Poppy and Nana’s to pick up Mason, only to unexpectedly switch and let Sydney stay Saturday night. She had been asking all day to go.

For once my house is clean (although my pantry could use some serious organization, but I’m trying to let that go). My work to-do list is not totally overwhelming. And for once, I’m feeling pretty relaxed. I could almost take a Sunday afternoon nap. Almost.

I guess the moral of this story is I am so very thankful for three sets of grandparents who are involved in our kids lives and who don’t ever (seem to, at least) mind to spend time with them. I certainly appreciate the help more than I can say, and the kids love going. So kudos to them, and yay for small breaks.

  • Always a pleasure to have the grandkids at our house. They are such a joy and I know you need the break from time to time. Just wish I was retired and could keep them more, through the week even. They are two adorable, sweet, comical children and we love them!!!
