The Old Mill Pottery House Café & Grille

The Old Mill Pottery House Café & Grille

Last week while we were in Tennessee (the Pigeon Forge greater area) we ate a good share of home cookin’. In an area known for it’s down-home quaintness, there is enough homestyle food to go around. And then some.

Smack in the middle of all this is Old Mill Square, centered around an old grist mill that’s been there since the 1800s. It’s still used to grind grain, and there’s a great little general store where you can buy flours, cornmeal, and tons of pickles, jams, spices and more. Every year my family eats at the original Old Mill Restaurant, which is good, but is still just traditional home cookin’ food. So we decided to try out the Pottery House Cafe & Grill. And. It. Was. Delicious.

The menu was full of homestyle favorites, but with lots of modern twists. The bread was soft and contained – get this – some whole wheat flour. I ordered fried green tomatoes for an appetizer, and they were deliciously crispy and flavorful, and topped with grated Parmesan. My daughter liked that part.

For my meal, I ordered maple-glazed pecan pork chops. I don’t usually go for pork chops, but I do go for maple glazes and pecans. Another winner. I ordered the jalapeno corn pudding, which was sweet, tangy and spicy, and the smooth pudding was a great contrast to the crisp corn. Finally, I ate my entire bowl of mouth-watering white cheddar grits. Oh, grits, how have you made it so long in the south without becoming common in the farther north. I love me some grits.

My whole family enjoyed their food as much as I did, and I will definitely be visiting again next year. I highly recommend you do the same. And eat some grits for me, ok?
